Feldspar

Feldspar is the name of a group of rock-forming minerals that make up as much as 60 percent of the Earth's crust.Feldspars crystallize from magma in both intrusive and extrusive rocks, and they can also occur as compact minerals, as veins, and are also present in many types of metamorphic rock.Rock formed entirely of plagioclase feldspar (see below) is known as anorthosite.

Feldspar minerals make up over 50% of Earth's crust.

What is Feldspar? Feldspar is the name of a large group of rock-forming silicate minerals that make up over 50% of Earth's crust. [1] They are found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks in all parts of the world. Feldspar minerals have very similar structures, chemical compositions, and physical properties. Common feldspars include orthoclase (KAlSi 3 O 8), …

Feldspar can be replaced by other minerals and mineral mixtures of similar physical properties. Minerals that could be used to replace feldspar include pyrophyllite, clays, talc, and feldspar-silica (quartz) mixtures. The abundance of feldspar will make these substitutions unnecessary for the foreseeable future. Uses

Plagioclase Feldspar. These minerals have a triclinic structure. The list of minerals in this classification includes: Anorthite – It is mostly found in igneous rocks, and used in making ceramics and cement. It has the formula CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8.. Bytownite – This mineral is one of the rarest types of feldspar. Its chemical formula is (NaSi,CaAl)AlSi 2 O 8.

The chemical composition of feldspars includes alcalic metals, aluminum, silica and oxygen. The general chemical formula is a bit complicated (K,Na) 1-x (Ca,Ba) x (Si 3-x Al 1+x O 8).This complexity is caused by presence of both monovalent and divalent cations which require more complicated heterovalent substitution.

Minerals of the feldspar group are the most abundant constituents of both the continental and oceanic crust of the Earth and the surface of the Moon, making up more than 50% by volume. Feldspars have been identified on Mars and are known from meteorites. They are Na, K and Ca aluminosilicates based on a 3-dimensional framework of linked Si– and Al–O tetrahedra.

The fluorescence spectra of the labradorite and andesine feldspar before and after copper diffusion. The strong fluorescence (under 320 nm excitation) was verified as the key evidence of copper diffusion treatment. The strong fluorescence is attributed to residual Cu+ ions within the feldspar lattice resulting from copper diffusion treatment.
