The livelihoods of 130 to 270 million people, in 81 countries, depend on artisanal mining (World Bank 2020). 41 of these countries are in Africa, where a large majority of artisanal miners extract gold (ASM Inventory 2022). We use "artisanal mining" to refer to labour-intensive methods of mineral extraction in artisanal and small-scale mines.
