I will be drilling 52 holes in this exposed aggregate so the more accurate the better. I do have a roto hammer as well, the issues is not my tool is the bit itself walking on the aggerates before it starts to actually drill..

In the aggregate industry, gravel is a natural product created by natural forces. Crushed stone, of course, is produced by mechanical rock crushing equipment. I'm told that crushed stone is a better option because the squared edges create more gaps and the rounded edges of natural gravel creates smaller gaps.

We had a new driveway and walkway poured 7 days ago. It is exposed aggregate that looked OK wet when first washed to expose the small rocks. As it dries/cures, however, the surface appears splotchy as if the washing was not consistent or complete. It looks as though the small rocks were exposed more in some sections and less in others.

It is actually 5" thick with rebar over gravel and is the same concrete they used for the foundation (decent sized aggregate throughout). It is built on over a foot and a half of compacted road base that he trucked in to raise the house and driveway from its original position.

And if you mean the existing "aggregate" is exposed aggregate finish, I would put an expansion joint if aesthetics were important (if seen) between the two finishes. Also, not much info, but stair stringers should not rest on a concrete pad, they mount to the railing posts which should have footings.

Could be. Names can vary from region to region, and even from supplier to supplier. That's why I attempted to describe the material, in addition to giving the names I knew that it goes by in this area. I wasn't trying to be contrarian; just inform that the term "graded aggregate base" is not a universal thing, nor an AASHTO thing.

My husband chose stained exposed aggregate. They came in with one truck poured half the patio, sprayed the chemical, brushed and washed. Next truck, same thing. One side looks like regular concrete will small patches of exposed, the other looks like exposed aggregate should but feels bumpy not rough to walk on (uncomfortable).
