8.5.2 Triple Superphosphates

Triple superphosphate, also known as double, treble, or concentrated superphosphate, is a fertilizer material with a phosphorus content of over 40 percent, measured as phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5). Triple superphosphate is produced in only 6 fertilizer facilities in the U. S.

Composition: Concentrated superphosphate is composed predominately of monocalcium phosphate hydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2•H2O) and generally contains 43-50% P2O5 (Budavari, 1996). This is distinguished from both ordinary superphosphate and food- or feed-grade monocalcium phosphate such as mono-, di- and tri-basic calcium phosphates.

When to Apply Super Phosphate to a Garden

The most important time to apply super phosphate is before planting -- phosphorus is critical for seedling root development and early growth. Perform this application very soon before planting to ensure that fixation does not render the phosphate unusable by the time it is needed by seedlings.

Superphosphate

Triple superphosphate is a component of many proprietary fertilisers. It primarily consists of monocalcium phosphate, Ca(H 2 PO 4) 2. It is obtained by treating phosphate rock with phosphoric acid. Many proprietary fertilisers are derived from triple superphosphate, for example by blending with ammonium sulfate and potassium chloride.

Triple Superphosphate

Triple superphosphate (TSP) was one of the first high-analysis phosphorus (P) fertilizers that became widely used in the 20th century. Technically, it is known as calcium dihydrogen phosphate and as monocalcium phosphate, [Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ .H₂O].

PROPERTIES OF TRIPLE SUPERPHOSPHATE – TSP

TSP provides the highest concentration of straight phosphate fertilizer that is available. Provides a P source for production of blends for leguminous crops where no additional nitrogen is desired. Granules dissolve rapidly in the soil in the presence of adequate soil moisture.
