Immobilization of mercury by pyrite (FeS2)

One column (control) contained no pyrite (sand only), while the other column also contained pyrite at the column exit. The barrier material consisted of 0.25 g of washed pyrite mixed with 0.75 g of the pure quartz sand; 0.25 g of this mixture was distributed evenly at the top of the column producing a ∼0.1 cm thick permeable barrier.

Evolution and origins of pyrite in sandstone-type uranium deposits

Sandstone-type uranium deposits in the Ordos Basin, with grades ranging from 0.03 to 0.1% U, represent one of the most important sources of uranium in China (Xia and Liu, 2005, Akhtar et al., 2017).Pyrite is one of the most common minerals associated with uranium in the sandstones hosting these deposits (Min et al., 2005, Cai et al., 2007, Jiao et al., 2018a).

Pyrite-chlorite and pyrite-biotite relations in sandstones

Microprobe analyses of the sand-sized chlorite grains (Table 4) indicates that, as in the case for interstitial chlorite matrix (Table 2), those chlorite grains containing relatively high amounts of pyrite have a lower Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratio (average of 0.59) than chlorite grains with low or no pyrite content (average ratio of about 0.75).

Pyrite | Indiana Geological & Water Survey

Pyrite is a pretty mineral (Fig. 1) common to Indiana, but it also has a dark side. It is composed of iron (Fe) and Sulfur (S) with a chemical formula of FeS2. Atoms are arranged in an isometric crystal structure (Fig. 2) that makes cubic crystals. It shows a brassy, bright metallic luster when fresh, but readily tarnishes to dull surfaces upon exposure (Fig. 3A).
